Wooden Acacia Tree – Large Hand-Painted Savanna Tree Toy

About the Acacia Tree

The flat-topped acacia is the tree most people picture when they imagine the African savanna. Its wide, umbrella-shaped crown catches as much sunlight as possible with very small leaves, and its long roots reach deep water through the dry season. Many acacias protect themselves with sharp thorns – but the giraffe simply works around them with its long, flexible tongue.

One East African acacia, the whistling thorn, has an even better defence. Its swollen, hollow thorns are home to colonies of ants, which swarm out to attack any animal that starts to eat the leaves – even an elephant. When the wind blows across empty thorns, they whistle, which is how the tree got its name.

Assembled tree – Height × Width × Depth: 24.0 × 26.0 × 3.6 cm (9.4 × 10.2 × 1.4 in)

All pieces are shaped from solid ash wood and hand-sanded to a smooth finish with no sharp edges. The crown and base are hand-painted with water-based paints, the trunk keeps the natural grain of the ash, and every piece is finished with olive oil, which protects the wood against moisture. No plastics, no solvent-based finishes, no MDF, no veneers. Made in conformity with the European toy safety standard EN 71. Small variations in colour and grain are a natural part of handmade production, not defects.

The savanna in a single tree.

The acacia turns animal play into a real habitat: giraffes reach for its leaves, elephants rest in its shade, birds nest in its crown. It invites children to ask how animals and plants depend on each other – why a tree grows thorns, why ants would defend it, why giraffes have such long tongues. Assembling the four pieces asks for patience and careful hands.

Inspired by Montessori and Waldorf principles, the acacia is simple in form and real in its proportions, with no batteries, sounds or buttons – the child leads the play.

Solid ash is dense and hard-wearing, and every piece is sanded and painted by hand in our workshop in Romania. Tree by tree, the savanna grows with the child and lasts long enough to be passed on.
