Wooden Native American River Camp Figurines – Teepee, Canoe & Totem

Life at the River Camp

Across North America, many Indigenous nations built their lives around rivers and lakes. The canoe carried families, food and news from one camp to the next, and the day's catch fed everyone. On the Great Plains, the tipi – a cone of wooden poles covered in hide – could be raised and taken down quickly whenever the camp moved. Totem poles come from a different region, the Pacific Northwest Coast, where tall painted cedar poles recorded the stories of a family or clan.

The River Camp brings these elements together as a play scene, not as a reconstruction of one nation. It is a starting point for children's own stories and for conversations about how different peoples lived close to the water.

All pieces are shaped from solid ash wood and hand-sanded to a smooth finish with no sharp edges. They are hand-painted with water-based paints and finished with olive oil, which protects the wood against moisture. No plastics, no solvent-based finishes, no MDF, no veneers. Made in conformity with the European toy safety standard EN 71. Small variations in colour and grain are a natural part of handmade production, not defects.

A river scene children can build, rearrange and grow with.

The River Camp gives children a concrete way into questions about how people lived before cities: where food came from, how families travelled, why a camp was set up beside the water. Placing the canoe on the river and deciding who fishes and who waits on the shore, children practise sequencing, cause and effect, and storytelling.

The set is inspired by Montessori and Waldorf principles: real materials, simple forms, and figures with no batteries, sounds or buttons. The figures do nothing on their own, so the story always comes from the child – the same chief can be a storyteller today and a grandfather tomorrow.

Solid ash is dense and hard-wearing, and every piece is sanded and painted by hand in our workshop in Romania. Because each piece is sold individually, the camp can grow over the years – a teepee for a birthday, the canoe the next Christmas – and be passed on complete.
