Wooden Birch Tree – Large Hand-Painted Forest Tree Toy

About the Birch Tree

Few trees are as easy to recognise as the silver birch. Its white bark gets its colour from a natural substance called betulin, and it peels away in thin, papery layers. Birches are pioneers: after a fire or a clearing, they are often the first trees to grow back, sheltering the slower trees that come after them.

People have used birch bark for thousands of years. In the Russian city of Novgorod, archaeologists have found more than a thousand medieval letters written on it. In Finland, the silver birch is the national tree, and in autumn its small leaves turn the golden yellow you see on this crown.

Assembled tree – Height × Width × Depth: 30.0 × 14.0 × 3.6 cm (11.8 × 5.5 × 1.4 in)

All pieces are shaped from solid ash wood and hand-sanded to a smooth finish with no sharp edges. They are hand-painted with water-based paints and finished with olive oil, which protects the wood against moisture. No plastics, no solvent-based finishes, no MDF, no veneers. Made in conformity with the European toy safety standard EN 71. Small variations in colour and grain are a natural part of handmade production, not defects.

A tree that tells the story of the seasons.

With its green and golden crowns, the birch is a natural way to talk with children about how trees change through the year – green in summer, gold in autumn, bare in winter. Fitting the four pieces together asks for patience and careful hands, and the white trunk makes the tree instantly recognisable on any play table.

Inspired by Montessori and Waldorf principles, the birch belongs both in woodland play and on the seasonal nature table. There are no batteries, sounds or buttons – the child leads the play.

Solid ash is dense and hard-wearing, and every piece is sanded and painted by hand in our workshop in Romania. Tree by tree, the forest grows with the child and lasts long enough to be passed on.
