Wooden Fir Tree – Large Hand-Painted Evergreen Forest Toy

About the Fir Tree

Firs are easy to confuse with spruces, but there is a simple test. Fir needles are flat and soft, each one attached to the twig by a tiny base shaped like a suction cup. And fir cones stand upright on the branches like candles – they fall apart on the tree, scale by scale, so you will rarely find a whole fir cone on the forest floor.

The European silver fir grows wild in the mountains of Europe, including the Carpathians in Romania, and can reach 50 metres. Its cousin from the Caucasus, the Nordmann fir, has become one of the most popular Christmas trees because it keeps its needles so long.

Also available as a Small Fir Tree. Build a woodland with the Large Birch Tree and Large Oak Tree.

Assembled tree – Height × Width × Depth: 30.0 × 15.0 × 3.6 cm (11.8 × 5.9 × 1.4 in)

All pieces are shaped from solid ash wood and hand-sanded to a smooth finish with no sharp edges. The crown is hand-painted with water-based paints, the trunk and base keep the natural grain of the ash, and every piece is finished with olive oil, which protects the wood against moisture. No plastics, no solvent-based finishes, no MDF, no veneers. Made in conformity with the European toy safety standard EN 71. Small variations in colour and grain are a natural part of handmade production, not defects.

Green in every season.

The fir is the tree that stays green when the others are bare, which makes it a natural way to talk with children about evergreens and deciduous trees, winter and the forest that keeps living under the snow. Fitting the four pieces together asks for patience and careful hands, and the finished tree gives a mountain or winter scene its tallest landmark.

Inspired by Montessori and Waldorf principles, the fir belongs on the seasonal nature table from the first frost to the end of winter, and at the centre of Christmas play. There are no batteries, sounds or buttons – the child leads the play.

Solid ash is dense and hard-wearing, and every piece is sanded and painted by hand in our workshop in Romania. Tree by tree, the forest grows with the child and lasts long enough to be passed on.
