Wooden Fir Tree – Small Hand-Painted Evergreen Forest Toy

The Tree That Rises

The Latin name for fir, Abies, comes from a word meaning "to rise" – fitting for a tree that grows tall and straight on mountain slopes. Turn a fir twig over and you will see two pale stripes running along the underside of each flat needle, a quick way to tell a fir from its neighbours.

Firs have long been useful as well as beautiful. Resin from the European silver fir was used to make turpentine, and oil from its fragrant needles was traditionally used to ease breathing during winter colds.

Also available as a Large Fir Tree. Build a woodland with the Small Birch Tree and Small Oak Tree.

Height × Width × Depth: 23.5 × 12.0 × 1.8 cm (9.3 × 4.7 × 0.7 in)

All pieces are shaped from solid ash wood and hand-sanded to a smooth finish with no sharp edges. The crown is hand-painted with water-based paints, the trunk and base keep the natural grain of the ash, and every piece is finished with olive oil, which protects the wood against moisture. No plastics, no solvent-based finishes, no MDF, no veneers. Made in conformity with the European toy safety standard EN 71. Small variations in colour and grain are a natural part of handmade production, not defects.

An evergreen for every season of play.

When the other trees lose their leaves, the fir stays green – an easy way for children to discover the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. Placed in rows, the small firs become a mountain forest; placed alone, a single tree beside a cottage or a sleeping bear.

Inspired by Montessori and Waldorf principles, the fir is simple in form and real in its details, with no batteries, sounds or buttons. From the first snow to Christmas morning, it is the tree of the winter nature table.

Solid ash is dense and hard-wearing, and every tree is sanded and painted by hand in our workshop in Romania. Tree by tree, the forest grows with the child and lasts long enough to be passed on.
