Wooden Birch Tree – Small Hand-Painted Forest Tree Toy

Life Around the Birch

A young birch does not start out white: its bark is reddish-brown at first and only turns silver-white after a few years. In spring, people in Finland, Russia and the Baltic countries tap birch trees for their sweet, watery sap, and in Finnish saunas, bundles of leafy birch twigs called vihta are a long tradition.

Under the ground, the birch has a famous partner. Its roots live together with the fly agaric, the red mushroom with white spots – the fungus helps the tree take up water and minerals, and the tree feeds the fungus with sugar. Where you find birches, you often find fly agarics.

Also available as a Large Birch Tree. Add a Red Amanita Muscaria Mushroom at its foot, or build a woodland with the Small Oak Tree and Small Fir Tree.

Height × Width × Depth: 23.5 × 12.0 × 1.8 cm (9.3 × 4.7 × 0.7 in)

All pieces are shaped from solid ash wood and hand-sanded to a smooth finish with no sharp edges. The crown and trunk are hand-painted with water-based paints, the base keeps the natural grain of the ash, and every piece is finished with olive oil, which protects the wood against moisture. No plastics, no solvent-based finishes, no MDF, no veneers. Made in conformity with the European toy safety standard EN 71. Small variations in colour and grain are a natural part of handmade production, not defects.

An autumn forest in a single tree.

With its golden crown and white bark, the small birch opens easy conversations about autumn – why leaves change colour, what happens to trees in winter, which animals and mushrooms live in a birch wood. It is light enough for small hands and steady enough to stand anywhere in the scene.

Inspired by Montessori and Waldorf principles, the birch is simple in form and real in its details, with no batteries, sounds or buttons. It belongs as much on the seasonal nature table as in woodland play.

Solid ash is dense and hard-wearing, and every tree is sanded and painted by hand in our workshop in Romania. Tree by tree, the forest grows with the child and lasts long enough to be passed on.
